Home Gym Ideas: Our List of Top 5 Home Gyms

Our List of Top 5 Home Gyms

While it would be nice to incorporate specific machines into our bodybuilding routines, the impulse to find workout equipment that solves all of our needs is unavoidable. The home gyms have been the major players in satisfying the need for an all-inclusive bodybuilding and fitness equipment. Here we provide our list of top 5 favorite home gyms to help you with choosing the home gym equipment that might work best for your specific needs depending on your fitness level, degree of experience, and overall fitness and bodybuilding goals.

Bowflex PR1000 Home Gym

The Bowflex PR1000 is a great choice for beginner and mid-level strength trainers looking to provide themselves with a home-based training program.

PROS:
  • Terrific variety of strength exercises available
  • Very small workout space required (about 8 ft x 6 ft)
  • Very affordable and trusted name brand

CONS:
  • More expensive than most home gyms
  • Results will not be as practical as free weights
  • Weight resistance limited at 300 lbs.

On the plus side, we like the PR1000 because it is a relatively small home gym solution, it provides options for working out every part of your body and it has a relatively high weight limit at 300 lbs of resistance. With regular use, this machine will give you a sculpted body since it takes care of the 4 major muscle groups all bodybuilders develop. Because it is a home gym and uses resistance rods as its workout mechanism, the PR1000 also reduces the likelihood of injury since it forces you to use proper form in order to complete your workout. While these results will not be on par with what you might expect from free weights, you are also not going to hurt yourself while using this machine.

On the downside, the PR1000, like all home gym options, does not provide free weights which are known to produce better strength training results. It also has limitations in how much resistance it can provide during a workout, although if you need more than 300 lbs. of resistance during your workout you are probably past the point of needing a home gym. Finally, because of the recognized brand name, the PR1000 is more expensive than most home gyms on the market. However, it is one of the most flexible units and is worth it if you are planning to make regular use of it.

Overall the PR1000 is one of our top picks for a beginner-mid level workout enthusiast who wants to build some muscle in the comfort of their own home.

Phoenix 99226 Power Pro Olympic Bench

PROS:
  • Can be used to workout any part of your body
  • Easy to put together and very sturdy
  • Uses free weights for maximum bodybuilding potential

CONS:
  • Does not include weight sets
  • Not ideal for beginners
  • Needs a large room to be practical

The Phoenix Power Pro makes our list because it is an affordable meat-and-potatoes home gym designed for use by mid-level to experienced body builders who know what they are doing. All major muscle groups can be worked out on this machine which has the flexibility and durability to handle just about any weight you put on it. The Power Pro uses free weights, which means your workout will give you the highest muscle-building potential. The drawback of this is that you have to know proper form during your training in order to reduce the risk of injury. This is why we do not suggest this home gym for beginners.

The downside of the Power Pro is that it does not come with weight sets or resistance gear. You have to acquire these items separately which can increase the price significantly. On the other hand, getting your own weight set gives you a chance to truly customize your home gym, which many fitness buffs love. The other major drawback of the Power Pro is that it does not collapse, meaning you require a significant amount of floor space to set it up. We suggest using an entirely separate room for it since it covers a lot of floor space. A 10 ft. x 10 ft. room should be sufficient.

Overall, we suggest the Power Pro to an experienced body builder or weight trainer who wants a solid, flexible home gym which provides free weight potential. We definitely do not suggest it if you are just beginning to get into weight lifting.

Marcy Diamond Elite Smith Cage with Linear Bearings

PROS:
  • Designed for a total body workout
  • Free weight or track weight lifting gives you flexibility in workout choice
  • Extremely durable and will last a long time

CONS:
  • Very expensive
  • Can be daunting if you are not accustomed to regular workouts
  • Very heavy to move and needs a lot of space to set up

On this list, the Elite Smith Cage is the crème de la crème of home gyms. It has everything – options for resistance training, free weight potential, cardio workout possibilities and mechanisms for targeting specific muscle groups to make your workout as challenging as you want it to be. We cannot say enough about this home gym. It has the durability to last for years of regular use, will definitely give you results if you use it 3 to 4 times per week, and can be used by inexperienced and experienced users alike.

However, there are some downsides. The Elite Smith Cage is extremely heavy (over 300 lbs.) and therefore is difficult to transport. Once it is set up, it is there to stay so make sure you have planned out where you want it in your home before you begin putting it together. Additionally, because this home gym comes with all the bells and whistles, it is also one of the more expensive home gym options you will find on the market.

For the reasons listed above, we feel this home gym can be used by anyone with the caveat that anyone considering buying it should consider the following:

1) You MUST plan to use it 3 to 4 times per week

2) You MUST have an entire room to dedicate to this machine

3) To validate the expense, you need to make a 1-year commitment to weightlifting

If you cannot say yes to the 3 conditions above, this home gym probably isn’t for you.

Bowflex Blaze Home Gym

PROS:
  • No free weights required
  • Gives 60 different workouts to target your entire body
  • Weight limits can be increased as you grow stronger

CONS:
  • More expensive than free weight home gyms
  • Requires a lot of space to set up
  • Some limitations on aspects of the machine (such as the rower attachment)

The Bowflex Blaze is another home gym released by the well-known Bowflex brand which focuses on producing quality results through mechanical strength training. It does not require any free weights, making it more affordable but also less effective than free weight home gyms. However, the trade-off of this is that even beginners can use it without fear of injuring themselves. There are an enormous number of workouts you can perform with this machine which gives you the opportunity to work out every part of your body easily and efficiently. Perhaps most important to the experienced weight lifters out there, the Blaze also features weight attachments that can be swapped out to increase the maximum potential resistance you will face during your workout, opening the doors to further gains.

One significant drawback to the Blaze is that it is a more expensive version of other Bowflex machines on the market. While cost is not the only factor to consider when buying a home gym, you need to know what you plan to do with it once you buy it and what results you are looking to attain. In this case, the Blaze is not likely to give the average person better results than a standard model like the PR1000. However, if you plan to make weight lifting a regular part of your fitness regimen, the Blaze is a great choice because it provides upgrades while the PR1000 does not.

Long story short, the Blaze is ideal for someone looking to make weight lifting a major part of their workout regimen. If you are not serious about building muscle, this is probably not the home gym for you.

Body-Solid StrengthTech

PROS:
  • All-in-one home gym solution
  • Works out most parts of your body
  • Extremely durable

CONS:
  • Very expensive
  • Takes up a lot of floor space
  • Does not work out your abs

The StrengthTech home gym is another all-in-one muscle-building fitness solution. It was designed for use by experienced weight lifters who want to take the gym experience home with them. The StrengthTech is an incredible piece of machinery, with weights built in to provide maximum ease of use without reducing your workout’s effectiveness. It can easily build back, chest, arm, shoulder and leg muscles using an integrated weight system which shows you how far you’ve progressed over time. It is also one of the toughest machines on the market and is solidly put together.

On the downside, the StrengthTech fails to provide workouts for your core, which we feel is a significant oversight on the part of the manufacturer. You can create abdominal workouts using this machine, but that is not what it was designed for. When you combine this fact with how much floor space it takes up and how much it costs, it is easy to see why we only suggest this gym for die-hard muscle builders looking to get the best overall workout possible. On the plus side, the manufacturer’s warranty covers this home gym for “Everything Forever”. This means the purchase of this home gym will be the last one you have to make. After all, ab workouts are easy to create without the need for a home gym, so the fact that the StrengthTech doesn’t feature ab workout potential is not a big deal at the end of the day.

The StrengthTech home gym is the gym for you if:

  1. You don’t want to buy any other workout equipment
  2. You are committed to building muscle
  3. You have a lot of space in your home to fit it

The StrengthTech is NOT the home gym for you if:

  1. You have never bought workout equipment before
  2. You have a small home or no space to put it
  3. You don’t plan to use it after 3 months – it will become a very expensive (and heavy!) room blocker

That does it for our top picks of strength building home workout equipment. Consult this list to help you decide on what kind of equipment you need to make your workout a success!
